Classic art adorns new Route 440 plaza in Bayonne

The Alessi Organization is proud to announce that we have officially broken ground on the construction of a new storage facility, CubeSmart. We are happy to welcome CubeSmart to Bayonne and look forward to the benefits that this facility will bring to the community.

For over a century, this property has housed a rich variety of industrial and commercial spaces; CubeSmart follows in the area’s proud history. The site already brought a number of world-class companies to Bayonne, including Hunt-Wesson, manufacturer of Hunt’s Tomato Ketchup and Wesson Oil. Most recently, the space housed Manhattan Chocolate’s production facilities. We look forward to continuing and building upon this tradition with this groundbreaking.

When completed, the Cube Smart storage facility will consist of seven stories and have approximately 1,700 units, as well as seven loading docks. The facility will also feature high security and full climate control. Cube Smart will be open seven days per week, with limited hours on Sundays.

This groundbreaking is just one part of the Alessi Organization’s larger redevelopment project along East 22nd Street, which includes the development of The Crossing Shopping Center. We are proud to welcome Quick Check, Burger King, and Auto Zone as our anchor tenants for this location.

The Crossing Shopping Center will also feature a pedestrian plaza, featuring a limestone frieze that, for nearly 75 years, decorated the Philadelphia Civic Center. The piece is a homage to the timeline of construction and labor through history and was salvaged prior to the demolition of the Civic Center. We are happy to have the privilege of sharing this piece with the people of Bayonne and creating a space for the community.

Alessi Organization and Duraport Marine and Rail Terminals is proud to announce the grand opening of Filling Station East, a pioneer of premium wine on tap, located within The Duraport Marine & Rail Terminal Facilties.

The Alessi Organization has worked to bring growing, innovative industries from around the globe to Bayonne. This site, which was the home of the former EMD Chemical facility and part of the original Merck Family Holdings, was also home to an almost forgotten chapter in history– as a WWII POW camp, which housed thousands of Italian POWs. This goes back to the history of New York, Staten Island and New Jersey as the sites of Navy bases for the larger part of the 20th century. The Alessi Organization then acquired the Brownfield site from Rollins Terminal as part of the Durport Marine and Rail Terminal logistics facility.

This salvaged site had spent nearly two decades either under-used or abandoned, until recently. Over the past several decades, there been an expansion of the Panama Canal and a deepening of the New York/New Jersey harbor, which has created a greater demand for space and business in Bayonne and the surrounding New York Harbor. This port also serves as a port of entry for salt, lumber, steel, and many other dry bulk commodities.

Now, the former site of Port Johnson houses a major East Coast filling station for kegged wines. The facility will be a joint venture by two leaders in the industry, The Gotham Project and Free Flow Wines. This 12,000-square-foot space will now serve the community and the kegged-wine industry at large, as it will be used for everything from keg-filling to industry marketing.

The Bergen Point Brass Foundry, founded in the late 19th century, was a center of enterprise for Bayonne for almost 100 years. It served an important role as a manufacturing hub for brass parts for the military, employing hundreds. Unfortunately, the site dwindled– both in employees and importance–until it was abandoned nearly two decades ago. The abandoned Brownfield site presented a significant environmental challenge as well as financial liabilities from the previous operation, which prevented the site from being developed for decades.

However, that original spirit was still inspiring; in keeping with Bergen Point’s history of enterprise, three new businesses now reside there—bringing jobs to Bayonne and renewal to Bergen Point. The former site of the Bergen Point Brass Foundry has been repurposed for the community as the newly renovated Bergan Point Commerce Center. For several months, The Alessi Organization has been remediating the site and renovating and constructing new facilities for these new businesses. These new buildings have been designed and even named with the history of the site in mind.

The first phase of the project was completed months prior, consisting of a privately- funded remediation effort and renovation of the former administration and warehouse building on West 5th Street. The company housed in this first building is the North American headquarters of Fluitec—a lubrication technology firm— which relocated its corporate headquarters, research and development lab, and warehouse to Bergen Point. The location is also home to one of the most advanced research labs in the industry.

Phase two consisted of creating a newly erected retail building on the former foundry site at the foot of the newly constructed entrance to the Bayonne Bridge. The Bergan Point Commerce Center was built on the former site of the foundry itself and even bears the foundry’s original sign. The plaza’s anchor tenant, Dollar Tree, will open officially on Tuesday, October 3rd. As Francesco and Vincent Alessi complemented Bayonne’s involvement in this endeavor, saying, “The redevelopment plan that was created by the city of Bayonne for this area was the catalyst for getting this project off the ground and completed.”

Bayonne, once the New Jersey coast’s best-kept secret, is poised for a wave of urbanization. This rapidly gentrifying area is drawing New York and New Jersey young creatives reminiscent to that of Brooklyn’s Bushwick in the early 2000s.
